Amid the fierce battles ongoing on the frontlines against Russian invaders, a heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded—an outstanding Ukrainian athlete and patriot has fallen.

Aleksey Khabarov, a multiple champion and record holder in shooting from Ukraine, lost his life while performing a combat mission as part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This sad news was announced by the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.

A soldier, who dedicated his life to sport and the service of his country, died while executing his duty to defend his homeland.

Khabarov was born in Gorishni Platni on the Poltava region, where he took his first steps in target shooting.

Over the years, he gained recognition at the national level, excelling in rifle shooting, setting records, and earning medals at national and international competitions.

In 2017, he defeated the future two-time Olympic medalist Serhii Kuliash, demonstrating his high level of mastery.

Beyond his sporting achievements, Aleksey was an active community figure—he founded the “Phoenix” shooting club in Gorishni Platni, where he mentored the younger generation of champions.

His mentors and young athletes remember him as a wise and dedicated coach who not only taught shooting skills but also inspired youth through his patriotism and courage.

“Aleksey was not only an exceptional athlete but also a true patriot who gave his most precious — his life — for Ukraine’s freedom and independence.

He was a model of courage and bravery, inspiring many young people,” his family and colleagues state.

The Ukrainian Olympic Committee’s local branch emphasizes that the nation and the city bow their heads in mourning, paying tribute to a hero who will forever remain in their hearts.

Eternal memory to an outstanding athlete and devoted patriot — Aleksey Khabarov will always symbolize resilience and loyalty to Ukraine.

His loss continues to evoke deep sorrow among all those who knew him and appreciated his contribution to Ukrainian sports and national defense.
