On August 23rd, Ukrainians around the world celebrate one of the most significant national holidays — Ukraine’s Flag Day.

This celebration has gained even greater importance amid the ongoing struggle for independence and territorial integrity, as the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag symbolize not only the country’s historical heritage but also the unwavering spirit of the Ukrainian people.

In the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion, this day has become a powerful reminder of unity and resilience, emphasizing the people’s belief in victory and the return of peaceful skies over their homeland. The tradition of commemorating this day dates back to the early days of Ukraine’s independence.

On August 23, 1991, during a critical period of asserting sovereignty, a group of deputies first officially brought the Ukrainian national flag into the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada.

This flag, now stored in the Rada’s museum, has become a symbol of Ukraine’s revival of its national values and dignity. In 2004, President Leonid Kuchma officially changed the date to August 23 to highlight its significance in modern Ukrainian history.

Previously, until 2004, Ukrainians celebrated this day on July 24, the anniversary of the first time the Ukrainian flag was raised over Kyiv’s city hall in 1990.

The appearance of the flag over the capital during that period marked a pivotal moment in the country’s national awakening and the formation of its identity. In 2009, President Viktor Yushchenko formally designated August 23 as Ukraine’s Flag Day, further consolidating its importance.

Since then, across Ukraine, ceremonial flag-raising events take place annually, symbolizing the unity and independence of the Ukrainian people in their ongoing fight for freedom and a peaceful future.
