In the Finnmark border region of Norway, a Russian serviceman was detained after illegally crossing the border and later requested asylum in the country.

According to lawyer Trond Piti, the detained individual is a former Russian soldier who served in the Russian armed forces and participated in combat operations in Ukraine.

The man crossed the border on foot, climbing over a fence, and upon entering Norwegian territory, he independently approached local authorities seeking protection.A human rights advocate confirmed that the individual is now undergoing the standard asylum review process.

The authorities became aware of his detention recently, and he has already undergone several interrogations and procedural steps.

This case is among several instances where Russian military personnel or militants seek refuge in Norway.

Earlier in 2023, Norwegian media reported that other members of Russian paramilitary units, including a former Wagner Group commander known for his involvement in conflicts and bar brawls, had also fled to Norway. These developments highlight increasing challenges in international security and political spheres, raising questions about the scale of internal migration among military personnel amid ongoing conflicts.
