Amid ongoing and intense fighting along the northern borders of the Sumy region, Ukrainian military units are striving to solidify new positions and repel enemy advances.

Recent reports reveal a complex picture of both territorial gains and losses on both sides, illustrating the precarious balance in this ongoing confrontation between Ukrainian defenders and Russian invaders.

According to the American Institute for War Studies (ISW), Ukrainian forces likely recently liberated the village of Varachyne in the northern part of the region, as evidenced by geolocation footage capturing Russian artillery strikes on Ukrainian positions in this settlement and surrounding areas.

Conversely, Russian troops announced advances near Yunakovka—located in the southeastern and eastern parts of the area—confirmed by video evidence from August 22 showing Russian troop movements and successful counterattacks.

The Ukrainian General Staff’s evening briefing confirmed that Ukrainian troops repelled five enemy assaults on the northern Slobozhansky and Kursk directions since the start of the day.

Additionally, Ukrainian defenders reportedly intercepted ten Russian air strikes using 20 guided bombs and stopped 221 enemy shellings, including two from multiple launch rocket systems.

Meanwhile, Russian forces continue active offensives in the Donetsk region, especially in the Liman sector, where they carried out 19 attacks and advanced in areas like Serebryansky Forest and near Serebryanka village, fighting over critical strategic objectives and logistical routes, complicating Ukrainian efforts and escalating regional tensions.
