Zelensky Responds to Lavrov’s Security Guarantee Proposals for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided a clear and pointed response regarding Russia’s recent statements about security guarantees for Ukraine in cooperation with Western countries.
In reaction to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s assertion that Russia must be an essential participant alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and China in providing security assurances to Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that security guarantees are vital for Ukraine so that future generations—our children and grandchildren—know that Russia will never attack our homeland.
‘Security guarantees for Ukraine are necessary so that you, our children, and grandchildren know for sure that Russia will not attack us.
These are security guarantees against the aggressor… Because the aggressor is Russia,’ he stated.
Zelensky also noted that many European partners support the idea of ensuring that war never repeats and explained that the entire process depends solely on one country — Russia.
This stance was preceded by a recent statement from Sergey Lavrov on August 20, claiming that Russia believes security guarantees should not only involve the United States, the UK, France, and China, but also Russia itself, upon which international discussions and concerns have intensified.
