Moldova on the Road to the EU: Survey Reveals Public Support for European Integration and Skepticism Towards NATO and Romania

Recent data from iData indicates that Moldovan citizens clearly favor European integration, yet their attitudes towards military alliances with NATO and unification with Romania remain divided.
The survey, which encompassed various age groups and social strata, revealed that over 57% of respondents support Moldova’s accession to the European Union, whereas only about 36% oppose it.
Conversely, approximately 61.5% are strongly against unification with Romania, with support for this idea around 31%.
Regarding NATO, a majority of the population favors maintaining neutrality, with nearly 60% opposing membership and only about 31% supporting integration into the Alliance.
These findings, collected in August 2025 from a nationally representative sample of over a thousand respondents, reflect genuine public sentiments and expectations regarding Moldova’s future.
While the country’s leadership publicly advocates for closer ties with the EU, internal public opinion appears more cautious and divided.
The Prime Minister emphasized Moldova’s desire to strengthen its European prospects while maintaining constitutional neutrality in military affairs.
Meanwhile, Romanian President Nikușor Dan expressed the opinion that unification between the two nations is only possible with mutual consent, highlighting the importance of a clear political course and strategic steps, particularly supporting Moldova’s EU integration.
This underscores the need for ongoing dialogue and joint efforts to realize these ambitions, recognized on the international stage and by policymakers in both countries.
