Escalating Fuel Crisis in Russia: Regions Imposing Restrictions and Seeking Alternatives

In recent weeks, the Russian Federation has been experiencing a sharp escalation of its fuel crisis, affecting nearly all regions across the country.

As gasoline shortages intensify, local authorities are compelled to introduce temporary sales restrictions in an effort to stabilize the situation and prevent a complete breakdown of the transportation system.

According to intelligence sources, during the second half of August, there was a significant surge in the purchase of Belarusian petroleum products, confirmed by data from the ‘Belneftekhim’ conglomerate.

This indicates that Russia has begun actively sourcing supplies from neighboring Belarus, which is rapidly increasing its refining capacity and exports to meet the mounting demand.

Meanwhile, the domestic situation continues to worsen.

After the annexation of Crimea, and in regions like Zabaikalye and Primorsky Krai, the fuel shortage has now spread to the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin oblast.

Since August 20, there have been implemented restrictions limiting gasoline sales to 10 liters per person.

According to the foreign intelligence service, priority will be given to security agencies, emergency services, and essential enterprises, while civilian access to fuel is increasingly limited.

These measures serve as yet another confirmation that Russia’s fuel crisis is intensifying and entering a severe phase, posing potential risks not only for everyday citizens but also for the broader economy.
