The Secrets Behind Zelensky’s Style Choice: A Wardrobe Symbolizing Hope and Peace

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky found himself at the center of attention not only because of the geopolitical events on the world stage but also due to the subtle details of his attire, which carried significant symbolic meaning.

It all began with a seemingly small but meaningful detail—designer Viktor Anisimov revealed that last Friday he presented Zelensky with a new black suit featuring a distinctive element.

This feature was a slit on the back, giving the outfit a civilian appearance while maintaining an official, military tone.

According to Anisimov, this design element symbolized hopes for peace and served as a sort of talisman for the leader.

When the suit was worn on Monday, it helped create a warm and trusting atmosphere during the meeting with U.S.

President Donald Trump at the White House.

As soon as Zelensky appeared, Trump immediately complimented his style, a reaction that surprised many and marked a contrast to his previous clothing choices, which often leaned toward military austerity and practicality.

Historically, Zelensky’s military-inspired style—T-shirts, sturdy boots—had drawn critique, especially from Trump during their awkward first meeting in February.

Anisimov, with over twenty years of experience, explained that he watched footage of that meeting and perceived the comments as directed not only against Zelensky but also against Ukrainians overall—an attitude of misunderstanding and neglect.

Consequently, creating a new image for the president became a personal act of support and trust for Anisimov.

Style is an important part of image-making, yet during wartime, Zelensky consciously opted for military-style clothing—comfortable T-shirts, boots, and dark colors—demonstrating solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers and inner resilience.

The new suit, prepared in black and navy blue, was initially designed for Independence Day celebrations in August.

While discussing the details, Anisimov had it ready for final adjustments, but an urgent request from the President’s Office required swift modifications for the overseas trip to the U.S.

This wasn’t the first time designer Anisimov influenced Zelensky’s wardrobe.

In the early 2000s, as a comedian, Zelensky transformed his style from humorous casual wear to formal attire—white shirts and suits—reflecting his growth and professionalism.

In 2023, after reconnecting with Zelensky, Anisimov proposed creating a capsule collection emphasizing military-inspired elements, aiming for versatility and symbolism.

Since February 2022, during the full-scale Russian invasion, Zelensky has often worn tactical jackets and dark tones, illustrating internal strength and solidarity.

During his recent visit to the U.S., the suit was more than clothing; it was a message of confidence and diplomatic support.

Today, Zelensky’s style represents a carefully balanced blend of formality, symbolism, and personal authenticity, allowing him to stand confident before the world even amid such challenging circumstances as war and high-stakes diplomacy.
