New U.S. Citizenship Requirements Emphasize Morality and Positive Contributions of Immigrants
The United States has introduced new approaches in assessing citizenship applications, extending the evaluation beyond mere legal violations to include the moral qualities and societal contributions of applicants.
According to a recent memorandum from the U.S.
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), officials are now instructed to assess applicants’ ‘good moral character’ not only based on the absence of criminal offenses but also on their positive impact within the community.
This includes participation in local activities, caring for family, educational levels, and community engagement.
At the same time, stricter controls are being implemented, with the potential to revoke citizenship if applicants commit serious crimes such as homicide, genocide, or drug trafficking.
Moreover, the new guidelines highlight that even legally permitted actions may adversely affect citizenship decisions if they are deemed incompatible with civic responsibility, like repeated traffic violations or accusations of witness intimidation.
Signs of genuine rehabilitation, such as paying overdue alimony or taxes, are also taken into account.
USCIS has updated its procedures to scrutinize applicants’ social media activity, especially regarding support or endorsement of anti-American or terrorist groups.
Agency representatives emphasize that overt approval or promotion of such organizations can serve as grounds for denial.
USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser stated: “We aim to eradicate any form of anti-American sentiment and strengthen a fair, value-based immigration system.” Previously, meeting the ‘good moral character’ criterion primarily involved the absence of criminal or disciplinary violations, but the new policy requires a more comprehensive personal and social assessment.
These changes have sparked debates and protests across the United States, particularly among supporters of liberal values and human rights.
In the current climate, increased attention is being paid to immigration processes amid ongoing political debates and efforts to curb illegal migration and reinforce national identity.
