Measles Surge: Ukraine Faces Growing Threat in 2025

In 2025, Ukraine is experiencing a sharp increase in measles cases, posing a significant health threat to both children and adults across the country.
According to the Ministry of Health, since the beginning of the year, over 1,200 cases of the disease have been recorded, nearly 900 of which involve children under 17.
This marks a dramatic rise compared to last year, when only around 70 cases were reported, indicating more than a tenfold increase.
Deputy Minister Ihor Kuzin, during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine, emphasized that without proper vaccination coverage, the risk of infection increases ninefold.
He pointed out that low immunization levels are fueling the spread of the virus.
Particular concern is raised about regions such as Kyiv, Odesa, and Ivano-Frankivsk, where vaccination rates are the lowest.
Current data shows immunization coverage at approximately 44% against measles, mumps, and rubella, whereas the World Health Organization recommends much higher levels to achieve herd immunity.
Epidemiologists warn that measles remains one of the most contagious infectious diseases, rapidly transmitting in confined groups such as schools, kindergartens, and hospitals.
The global situation, including in the European Union, continues to be tense.
The Ministry appeals to parents and adults to prioritize vaccination efforts, as inadequate immunization endangers children with severe complications and increases the risk of outbreaks in the future.
