Lithuania Again Rejects Military Support for Ukraine: Provocation or Caution?

Amid ongoing debates about increasing international military aid to Ukraine, the leader of Lithuania’s coalition party once again firmly refuses to send Lithuanian troops to the conflict zone.

Rimantas Žemaitaitis, head of one of the country’s major political forces, explicitly stated that Lithuania will not agree under any circumstances to send its military personnel to Ukraine.

He emphasized that such actions could escalate the conflict further, potentially dragging the European Union into an unwanted war.

According to Žemaitaitis, Russian provocation—likely to occur—poses a threat to regional stability and European security.

He argued that providing military assistance in Ukraine would violate international law and escalate tensions further.

Žemaitaitis also shared his perspective on peaceful settlement, asserting that if a lasting, stable peace is achieved in Ukraine, there would be no need for military intervention.

For him, signing a peace treaty is the key to reducing tensions, and the presence of troops would only be a temporary measure during wartime.

Previously, Lithuania’s presidential advisor Dainius Žiukaitis announced that the country plans to send as many troops to Ukraine as it previously contributed to NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

Discussions are ongoing in the international community about possible military involvement by the UK and France in Ukraine, with about ten countries reportedly willing to deploy their forces.

However, Lithuania’s official stance remains resolutely against direct military aid, emphasizing that any such steps could intensify the conflict and destabilize the entire region.
