Delay in Returning the Bodies of Fallen Ukrainian Soldiers: Russia’s Propaganda Tactics and Human Tragedies

On Tuesday, August 19, the Ukrainian public and officials received shocking news: Russia handed over more than a thousand bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
However, this process has been accompanied by delays and efforts to discredit Ukraine.
According to the Strategic Communications Center, the Russian side continues to obstruct the return of bodies and fails to fulfill agreements regarding the exchange of seriously wounded and critically ill prisoners.
This has sparked deep concern among the public, as identifying the bodies is complex and time-consuming, with Russian propaganda actively spreading false information, accusing Ukraine of refusing to return its defenders and recover bodies, aiming to sow chaos, discredit Ukrainian leadership, and lower morale among Ukrainians.
Meanwhile, Ukraine insists on restoring exchange processes based on the “all for all” principle, including the return of civilian detainees, deported children, and the bodies of all the deceased.
Russia complicates the identification process by returning damaged bodies in various containers, making verification difficult.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reports that Ukrainian defenders are often returned in severely mutilated states, with body parts in bags, and sometimes Russian military personnel’s bodies are found among them, further complicating identification efforts.
Experts warn that these delays have profound human and psychological impacts on families of the fallen and those still in captivity or missing.
All these facts reveal Russia’s deliberate attempts to sow chaos and weaken Ukrainian society during this critical period.
