Macron Outlines the Next Steps if Diplomatic Negotiations on Ukraine Fail

In light of recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, it becomes clear that France is prepared to take more assertive measures should diplomatic talks between the United States and Russia concerning Ukraine collapse.
Macron emphasized that if the diplomatic process does not yield results, Western nations will intensify sanctions against Moscow to pressure the Kremlin into resuming dialogue and seeking compromises.
He highlighted that the US and European partners are already working on security guarantees for Ukraine and expressed support for restoring direct communication between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Macron stated, “We agree that expanding sanctions is unavoidable if we want to keep pressure on Russia and compel it to return to diplomatic negotiations.” He also noted that long-term stability in Ukraine will depend on a robust military and continued assistance from allies.
Following the conclusion of active hostilities, Kyiv will require extensive international security guarantees, including peacekeeping missions, which are being discussed with NATO allies.
“We need to help Ukraine develop a strong army, and peacekeeping operations should be part of this effort,” Macron added.
Ukraine is also seeking security assurances similar to NATO’s Article 5, providing collective defense and protection against potential aggression.
Meanwhile, Russia maintains that any deployment of NATO troops on Ukrainian territory is categorically unacceptable and could escalate the conflict sharply.
Macron stressed the importance of maintaining diplomatic channels and seeking negotiated solutions, as direct conflict could worsen the situation, leading to more severe security consequences for Europe and the world.
