Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal made significant statements regarding the future of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the context of the war’s conclusion.

He emphasized that a sharp reduction in the strength of Ukraine’s military after the end of hostilities is not planned.

Instead, the process of downsizing will be carried out gradually, with careful planning and consideration of all possible circumstances and risks, to ensure long-term security for the country.

“Even after the war ends, Russia will remain a potential threat to our nation for a long time, perhaps forever.

Therefore, the best guarantee of our safety is a strong military — equipped with the best technology, highly trained personnel, and well-funded,” he said during a government program presentation on Monday.

Shmyhal added that Ukraine is already engaging in negotiations with international partners regarding the future size and composition of its armed forces.

These discussions include the possibility of maintaining or even increasing the number of troops, to reliably defend the eastern flank of Europe and NATO.

The reform of the army will proceed in line with strategic plans, ensuring the stability and resilience of Ukraine’s defense system in the years ahead.

The main goals are to establish a contract-based, professional, and combat-ready army that will not be abruptly downsized but developed gradually and systematically, considering all current challenges.
