EU Condemns Putin’s ‘Peace Plan’: A Forced Surrender That Threatens Ukraine and Europe’s Security

The European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, has sharply voiced her disagreement with Vladimir Putin’s recent ‘peace proposal’ announced in Anchorage, which she perceives as an ultimatum imposed by Russia itself.
In her Facebook post, the diplomat emphasized that the Kremlin’s proposal demands the surrender of Ukraine’s eastern regions, territories that extend beyond the areas temporarily occupied by Russian forces.
She stressed that such an offer cannot be called peace; instead, it represents a coercive ultimatum aimed at undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Unlike Donald Trump’s stance during his meeting with Putin in the United States, where he did not insist on an immediate ceasefire, the European Union has consistently advocated for a just peace based on international law and respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
A clear sign of EU support was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Brussels and his meeting with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Additionally, seven European leaders are expected to accompany Zelensky to Washington for talks with former U.S.
President Donald Trump.
Their joint presence will send a strong message of unity and unwavering support from Europe.
Maternova emphasized that the EU stands firmly with Ukraine, warning that concessions to Russia would undermine security not only for Ukrainians but for the entire continent.
She concluded by reaffirming the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, highlighting that any capitulation would open the door to catastrophic consequences for regional and global security.
