Anchorage Talks: Russia’s Tactical Victory and U.S. Image Setbacks in Meeting with Vladimir Putin

The summit between the leaders of Russia and the United States in Anchorage became one of the most scandalous and controversial in recent political history.

Following the meeting held on July 15, Russia achieved a tactical victory by maintaining its influential position on the international stage, while the United States faced significant image losses that are unlikely to align with their strategic interests.

Insights into these outcomes and behind-the-scenes details that shed light on the performances of major politicians were provided to ZN.UA by former Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S., Valeriy Chaly.

He emphasized that even amid attempts by the White House to rectify the situation, their weakness and inability to counter Russia are evident.

According to the expert, Vladimir Putin viewed this meeting as yet another opportunity to impose his narratives regarding Ukraine and the ongoing war.

On the other hand, Donald Trump’s focus on business and commercial interests turned these negotiations into an almost reputational setback for himself and the U.S.

The broader public has already recognized this, as Biden and his team have increased efforts to mitigate the damage from the summit.

Putin, as noted by analysts, perceives the event as a step toward strengthening his geopolitical ambitions, whereas Trump is primarily concerned with trade, economic, and commercial goals—often overlooking diplomatic subtleties and risks.

Analyzing future scenarios, Chaly suggests two possible paths: either Trump will attempt to push through decisions beneficial to Putin’s geopolitical plans, or he may withdraw from active involvement due to the difficulty in reaching compromises.

The meeting in Anchorage on July 15 concluded without concrete results—no ceasefire agreements or formal accords were reached, and even a ceremonial dinner was omitted.

Although the American president described the meeting as a ‘10 out of 10,’ the global media generally view it as a disgrace for the United States, highlighting their tarnished reputation and weakness vis-à-vis Russia, which gained a diplomatic and psychological advantage.

These events demonstrate once again that geopolitical struggles continue and have unpredictable implications for the future world order.
