The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, openly expressed his support for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and U.S.

President Donald Trump, commenting on their recent meeting in Alaska.

In his statements, he reiterated key Kremlin narratives, emphasizing the importance of dialogue on security guarantees for both sides amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Weeks earlier, Putin repeatedly articulated the ‘underlying causes’ of the war, framing it as a result of alleged threats posed by Ukraine to Russia, particularly relating to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and alleged Nazi elements within its government.

Fico highlighted that the Alaska summit ‘opened a new chapter’ in international relations, stating it was the first occasion where the conflict was no longer viewed in a black-and-white manner, thus potentially initiating a process of normalization between the U.S.

and Russia.

He added that this meeting could serve as a catalyst for revising diplomatic approaches and fostering more constructive dialogue, while noting that EU positions on the war differ from those promoted by the United States and Russia.

Fico also mentioned that increasing tensions persist within Europe among nations seeking independence, especially concerning the ‘iron curtain’ ideas and sanctions against Russia.

At the same time, he aligns more with pro-Russian sentiments, supporting the notion that the recent diplomacy may help stabilize the world situation.

His stance echoes the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s view, suggesting that the summit has contributed to making the world safer.

Overall, Fico advocates for pragmatic approaches to international conflicts, emphasizing that modern diplomacy needs to move away from simplistic ‘black and white’ narratives to achieve peace and stability.
