EU Calls for Greater Resolve and Unity in Negotiations with Russia and the US
The European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternoova, expressed concern over the apparent lack of firmness and decisive stance by world leaders during recent negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Anchorage summit.
According to her, despite the illusions of victory and high praise for the summit, the reality is clear: the true achievement would be establishing peace or at least an immediate ceasefire, which is yet to be seen.
Maternoova emphasizes that the EU remains consistent in its demands and red lines regarding Ukraine.
She stresses that these values are rooted in fundamental international law principles and must be upheld unwaveringly.
The main demands of the EU include respect for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, as well as the inviolability of its borders.
It is crucial that ceasefires occur under international monitoring and guarantees, with Ukraine playing an active role in negotiations.
Furthermore, Ms.
Maternoova highlights that during peace processes, broad security support for Ukraine must be ensured without restrictions on its right to defend itself and without Russian vetoes on its accession to the EU or NATO.
She calls for increased sanctions and political and economic pressure on the aggressor.
The EU firmly stands with Ukraine, providing political, military, financial, and humanitarian support, and promises to remain so until a just and sustainable peace is achieved, including after its establishment.
