Ukraine Prepares for Winter: Low Water Reserves in Reservoirs Threaten National Energy Security

As the cold season approaches, concerns about Ukraine’s water resources are mounting, with the lowest water reserves in reservoirs recorded in a decade.
Ukrhydroenergo reports that prolonged dry summer and insufficient river flow have significantly depleted water levels in reservoirs, complicating preparations for winter and potentially jeopardizing the stable operation of hydroelectric power plants.
The company emphasizes that to prevent energy crises and ensure reliable power supply amidst low water levels, measures are being taken to rationally manage water usage and accumulate necessary reserves.
As part of this strategy, reconstruction and scheduled repairs are underway at all hydropower and pumped storage stations to ensure their readiness for the autumn-winter period.
Additionally, water provision for consumers remains a priority, with ongoing monitoring of reservoir levels and water supply management.
Special attention is drawn to the situation at the Kakhovka Reservoir, which dried up after the hydroelectric plant was blown up in 2023 and is now prone to fires that suddenly ignite on its dried bottom.
Authorities and rescue services warn of the risk of rapid fire spread and call for caution.
All these factors pose significant challenges for the government in addressing energy and ecological issues related to the aftermath of hydropower conflicts and climate change.
