Mass Drone Attack on Volgograd: Fires at Lukoil Oil Refinery and New City Strikes
On the night of August 14, the Russian city of Volgograd experienced a large-scale drone attack that led to significant consequences for local industry and safety.
According to reports from Russian sources, including Telegram channels and the governor of the Volgograd region, Andrei Bocharov, drones targeted the territory of Lukoil-Volgograd Refinery — the largest oil facility in the region.
The attack resulted in powerful explosions, causing fires at the plant and a leakage of oil products near production facilities.The governor confirmed that falling drone debris caused fires and damages, requiring immediate response.
As a precaution, Russia’s Civil Aviation Authority temporarily closed the local airport to prevent further incidents.
The Lukoil-Volgograd refinery is a critical oil producer in Russia’s Southern Federal District, processing approximately 14.8 million tons of oil annually.Historically, the region has seen multiple attacks, highlighting heightened tensions.
On August 13, residents reported an attempted Ukrainian drone strike on the Krasnoarmeysky district of Volgograd, where the refinery is located.
Earlier, in January 2024, the plant was repeatedly targeted: on January 15, an explosion triggered a fire, while in early February and May, Ukrainian drones launched additional attacks on the same facility.
These incidents underline the increasing escalation of conflict, impacting the region’s security and energy infrastructure.
