Kyiv is currently undertaking extensive planning and preparatory works for the large-scale renovation of one of its critical transport arteries — Kharkiv Highway, located in the Dnipro district and Darnytskyi district of the capital.

The tender for the comprehensive overhaul of this 5.4-kilometer stretch has been announced, promising to transform one of the city’s most heavily trafficked roads.

Preliminary estimates indicate the project will cost over 1.4 billion hryvnias, with construction scheduled to commence in September 2023 and expected to be completed by the end of 2027.The project aims to not only repair the roadway and sidewalks but also modernize the stormwater drainage systems, street lighting, and ensure accessibility for all users.

This entails installing redesigned pedestrian crossings and cycling paths, including underground crossings with features suitable for individuals with limited mobility.

Depending on the possibilities, additional traffic lights and turning lanes are planned to improve traffic flow and safety.Special attention will be given to pedestrian zones — curbstones at crossings will be lowered to street level, and tactile navigation systems will be installed to assist visually impaired pedestrians.

Near the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, plans are underway to equip the underground pedestrian crossing with lifts to facilitate movement for people with disabilities.Overall, this project represents a significant step toward enhancing Kyiv’s transportation infrastructure, making traffic more comfortable and safer for residents and visitors alike, while upgrading the city’s road safety standards and modernity.
