US Temporarily Lifts Sanctions to Facilitate Alaska Summit Meeting Between Trump and Putin

In a move aimed at fostering diplomacy and ensuring the success of the scheduled summit on Alaska, the United States has temporarily suspended certain sanctions on Russian transactions.
The U.S.
Department of the Treasury announced on Wednesday, August 13, that these measures are aimed at allowing Russia to spend funds within the U.S.
for the organization and participation in the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S.
President Donald Trump, set for August 15.
The license, valid until August 20, five days after the summit, broadens the scope for Russian authorities and American businesses to carry out payments related to the event, which would otherwise be restricted by sanctions.
This license permits operations that are incidental and necessary for attending or supporting the diplomatic exchanges on Alaska’s territory between the U.S.
and Russian governments.
Specific details of allowable transactions have not yet been disclosed, but this move effectively prevents certain sanctions from hindering preparations.
According to reports, President Trump informed European leaders and Ukrainian President Zelensky on August 13 of his goal for the Alaska summit—to achieve a ceasefire and foster better understanding for possible comprehensive peace negotiations.
Zelensky stated he would be contacted by Trump following his meeting with Putin, and emphasized that if the summit proceeds well, a subsequent meeting including Zelensky could be arranged.
