President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Moscow, threatening very serious and potentially destructive repercussions if Vladimir Putin refuses to accept the terms for ending the conflict in Ukraine.

The statement was made during his visit to the Kennedy Center in Washington, where Trump emphasized that the consequences for Russia would be significant and dangerous.

While he did not specify whether these would involve new sanctions or tariffs, he indicated that the fallout could be ‘quite serious.’ These threats echo previous remarks by the incumbent president regarding the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, including discussions on possible sanctions against Russia.

Trump has previously set a deadline last Friday for the implementation of new sanctions if Putin refused to negotiate.

However, the deadline passed without new measures, partly because of the limited impact of such sanctions given the low level of trade between the US and Russia.

Trump also warned of secondary sanctions against countries purchasing Russian energy.

Despite introducing new tariffs against India — the second-largest buyer of Russian oil — he refrained from imposing additional tariffs on China, the biggest purchaser of Russian energy.

Future decisions on sanctions and measures will depend on how the situation evolves and Russia’s willingness to negotiate peace in Ukraine.
