Canadian Court Orders UIA to Pay Compensation to Victims of PS752 Crash in Iran

In Ontario’s appellate court, a decisive ruling was issued that definitively prevents Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) from challenging its obligation to compensate victims of the 2020 crash of flight PS752 in Iran.
The court upheld the previous decision, dismissing all appeals filed by the airline.
The court decree explicitly states: “The appeal is dismissed, with court costs to be paid by the appellant.” According to international regulations, airlines are responsible for compensating passengers up to $180,000 per individual, with the possibility of increases if negligence is proven.
In 2022, an Ontario court found that UIA had acted negligently by failing to conduct a proper risk assessment before flying from Tehran, which violated safety standards.
This ruling strips UIA of the ability to limit the compensation amounts to the victims’ families.
The crash on January 8, 2020, involved a UIA flight from Tehran to Kyiv that was shot down in Iran, resulting in 176 fatalities, including citizens from seven countries: Canada, Iran, Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany, the UK, and Ukraine.
Iranian authorities initially admitted their fault, acknowledging that the aircraft was mistakenly shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The families of the victims have demanded the transmission of black boxes for investigation, and diplomatic and legal procedures concerning justice and accountability continue to unfold.
