Smoke Detected Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: Official Statements from the Ministry of Energy and Potential Risks

Close to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), currently under temporary occupation by Russian forces, signs of smoke have been observed by personnel.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy’s press service, the exact location of the smoke’s origin and its possible consequences are currently being clarified.
The report states that the source of the smoke is outside the perimeter of the station itself, specifically in the area of the cargo port, which is also under occupation.
At the same time, the Ministry of Energy reminded that the presence of enemy equipment and personnel on the site constitutes a gross violation of international nuclear safety principles and poses serious risks to the safe operation of the facility.
Particularly concerning is the situation related to the spread of smoke amid a recent forest fire near Enerhodar, which could further jeopardize the region’s radiation safety.
The department emphasized that any provocative or aggressive actions at or around the ZNPP could lead to catastrophic consequences not only for the region but for the entire continent.
It was also highlighted that the aggressor’s continuous deployment of military equipment and troops on the station territory represents a systematic breach of international norms and continually endangers the safe operation of this strategic object.
