Putin Ignores Peace Efforts: Why the Alaska Meeting Won’t Bring Change – ISW Expert

According to analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Vladimir Putin continues to adhere to a policy of rejecting compromises regarding Ukraine.
Expert George Barros emphasizes that the Russian leader has yet to show any willingness to make concessions or seek a peaceful resolution.
Despite preparations for a summit between U.S.
and Russian presidents scheduled for August 15 in Alaska, the underlying factors preventing progress remain unchanged.
Barros believes that the Kremlin is attempting to use this meeting to deepen the divide between the U.S.
and Europe; however, the United States possesses significant influence and leverage, which, if fully utilized, could alter the situation in favor of peace.
Unfortunately, Washington has been cautious in deploying its resources, hindering efforts to pressure Putin into negotiations.
The leaders’ summit is expected on August 15 and is surrounded by speculation about potential agreements, particularly regarding ending the war in Ukraine and possibly cementing Russia’s occupation of parts of Ukrainian territory.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that the issue of territory retention is enshrined in Ukraine’s Constitution, and any solutions must adhere to national laws.
In light of recent international statements and joint messages from European and U.S.
leaders, the situation remains tense and highly dynamic.
The outcomes of this meeting could significantly impact the course of the war and regional stability.
