Ukraine continues to advance its judicial reform efforts, with recent developments confirming tangible progress alongside official statements.

On August 12, the High Council of Justice made a significant decision by appointing Ihor Kushnir to the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine.

This move marks an important step toward improving the judicial system and aligning with European standards.

The primary goal is to strengthen trust in the judiciary and reinforce the rule of law, thereby supporting Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.

European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, Kataryna Maternova, praised this development, emphasizing that the EU firmly supports Ukraine’s ongoing judicial reforms.

She highlighted that the appointment of a new member signals positive momentum in the country’s pursuit of a stronger, independent judiciary.

Notably, the candidate appointed is a retired Supreme Court judge, Ihor Kushnir, who replaced his colleague in April 2024 after the resignation of the previous member.

This reflects Ukraine’s commitment to filling the VKKS with experienced professionals critical for the reform process.

The EU underscores that to sustain progress, Ukraine must continue reforms, particularly focusing on the rule of law and anti-corruption measures, which are considered essential for further European integration and eventual EU candidate status.
