From Yalta to Alaska: The European Union diplomat calls on global leaders to exercise prudence and responsibility.

Katharina Maternova, EU ambassador to Ukraine, expresses concern over recent diplomatic meetings between the United States and Russia in Alaska, emphasizing that this summit could be decisive for Ukraine’s future and Europe’s security as a whole.

She states that if the meeting is truly meant to mark a new phase of peace, it must guarantee not only the cessation of hostilities but also respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its right to determine its own destiny. The ambassador highlights that lessons from history, such as the Munich crisis and Yalta, should not be forgotten by today’s leaders.

She stresses that the ‘existential stakes’ are high, and therefore world leaders must demonstrate maximum responsibility and caution.

The Alaska summit, described as ‘unexpected’ and ‘long sought by Putin,’ could shape the future not only of Ukraine but also European stability.

However, given that Ukraine will be absent from the summit, she underscores the importance of preemptive measures to prevent unacceptable decisions. She also notes that the scheduled virtual meeting of EU leaders and Ukrainian and American officials, initiated by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is a necessary step in this strategy.

Following the approval of a joint declaration supporting Ukraine, EU leaders are working urgently to prevent any unfavorable decisions on Friday.

Overall, the diplomat calls for prudence and responsibility to avoid historical mistakes and to lay the foundation for a stable and secure Ukraine and Europe.
