Mass Drone Attack on Moscow: Unexpected Night Raid and New Security Challenges for the Capital

On the night of August 11, the Russian capital experienced a significant attack involving drones.
According to Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin, at 21:55 on August 10, the Russian Defense Ministry’s air defense forces successfully shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle heading towards the city.
Later, at 00:41 and 00:48, two more drones were intercepted and destroyed while en route to Moscow.

Sobyanin noted that the crash sites are under control, and professionals are working to minimize consequences and respond swiftly to any emergencies. This is not the first such attack in this area.
Earlier reports from Russian sources described sounds of drone flyovers and explosions in the towns of Ramenskoye, Bronnitsy, and the village of Sofia — all located within a 20-kilometer radius of Moscow, within what is considered the ‘risk zone’ for potential attacks.
Particularly concerning is the fact that one of Moscow’s main airports, Zhukovsky Airport, is situated in this region, complicating the situation further. In connection with these events, warnings have also been issued regarding recent explosions and fires at the Saratov Oil Refinery.
Russian reports indicate that Ukraine has intensified its use of drones to target strategically significant facilities within Russia, including the attack on the Saratov plant, which was followed by large explosions and fires.
These developments highlight the increasing security threats faced by Russia, underscoring the complicated situation with heightened risks for civilians and critical infrastructure alike.
