The tech world has witnessed the emergence of a groundbreaking innovation from Google that promises to revolutionize environmental monitoring and management.

Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence systems, particularly the AlphaEarth Foundations model developed by DeepMind, a so-called ‘virtual satellite’ has been created.

This cutting-edge tool can produce highly detailed maps of various landscapes and urban areas in real time.

It offers capabilities to observe changes in tropical forests, coastal lines, water bodies, and urban expansion, as well as the condition of agricultural lands, regardless of geographic location or time constraints.AlphaEarth Foundations integrates trillions of images and measurements obtained from more than a dozen open sources, including NASA and ESA satellite missions like Landsat, MODIS, and Sentinel fleet data.

Data is stored and processed in a compact form, significantly reducing storage needs and increasing analysis speed.Over 50 organizations worldwide, including prominent ecological initiatives from Brazil and the European Union, are already utilizing AlphaEarth to monitor land use, deforestation, and water resources.

For instance, the Brazilian platform MapBiomas employs the technology to track changes in the Amazon rainforest, enabling faster and more accurate mapping of environmental shifts.Google plans to expand the dissemination of AlphaEarth’s results through the Google Earth Engine platform, facilitating scientific collaboration in environmental, climate, and resource management projects globally.

The widespread adoption of this technology will accelerate efforts to combat forest loss, improve resource planning, and study climate change effects.Recent advances in AI are also transforming medicine.

Australian researchers from CSIRO have developed a machine learning system capable of reading chest X-rays while considering patient history.
