Merk urges involving Zelensky in Trump-Putin talks: Ukraine’s vital role in the upcoming Alaska summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the upcoming meeting between US and Russian leaders scheduled for August 15 on Alaska.
According to Merz, Ukraine’s participation is crucial for achieving stability in conflict resolution and avoiding the duplication of territorial issues that have long been subjects of debate and contention.
He announced that ahead of a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, which is set to take place, the German government is actively coordinating with the American side regarding the preparations for the summit.
Merz highlighted that Europe, together with the US, must strive to find ways to end the war, expressing hope that high-level negotiations could facilitate resolution and ceasefire.
He pointed out that any decision should consider the broader interests of not only Russia and the US but also the Ukrainian people, stressing that territorial matters should not be discussed or resolved without Ukraine’s involvement.
The Trump-Putin meeting on Alaska is scheduled for August 15 and could serve as a turning point for new strategic decisions regarding the Ukraine war and future international agreements.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky has stated that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is already ensured by the Constitution, and any decisions must respect this fact.
Recent European leaders and EU officials have called for a unified stance on the meeting’s goals, insisting that ending the war in Ukraine is a fundamental condition for regional stability.
Analysts also note that the upcoming summit could be decisive in shaping future developments, provided the parties reach compromises to reduce tension and promote an end to active hostilities.
