The emergence of the new COVID-19 variant named Stratus (XFG) is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for Ukrainian society.

Confirmed cases have been identified in seven regions and the capital city, indicating this virus is actively spreading across different parts of the country.

According to the Ukrainian Public Health Center, the number of infections caused by this strain is gradually increasing, but the situation remains under control by medical authorities.

Acting General Director Oleksiy Danylenko stated that this situation does not place critical pressure on the healthcare system; however, it underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and strengthening preventive measures.

Epidemiologically, it is also noteworthy that similar to previous years, the summer months see a rise in infection rates, driven by increased social interactions and changing climatic conditions.

Over the past week, 684 new COVID-19 cases were registered, compared to 494 the week before.

The Stratus variant is characterized by a high transmission rate, yet it does not tend to cause more severe illness.

Most symptoms are limited to upper respiratory tract issues and voice hoarseness.

In Kyiv, healthcare officials report that hospitalizations involving COVID-19 complications have increased more than fourfold in just a month: from 15 patients in early July to 68 now, including 24 children.

Doctors note that hospitalized patients mostly have moderate to severe symptoms requiring constant medical supervision, intensive treatment, and oxygen support.

Moreover, this surge in cases coincides with increased air raid signals and people spending longer periods in shelters, which, despite being life-saving, creates additional risks due to poorly ventilated spaces.

prolonged stays in enclosed, poorly ventilated shelters can significantly increase the risk of infection, including COVID-19.

Recent studies indicate that vaccination has played a critical role in saving lives—approximately two and a half million Ukrainians—contradicting earlier estimates of 20 million.

Despite ongoing challenges, continued adherence to preventive measures and vaccination remain essential for personal and community safety.
