Meta Platforms reached a peaceful settlement with American conservative activist Robby Starbuck, who previously sued the tech giant over inaccuracies in responses generated by one of its AI chatbots.

The chatbot falsely claimed that Starbuck was involved in the January 6 Capitol riots, sparking widespread public and professional concern about AI accuracy and political neutrality.

Under the terms of the agreement, Starbuck agreed to serve as an advisor to Meta, focusing on reducing political bias in the company’s AI services.

Both parties announced that they have made significant progress in improving AI response accuracy and minimizing ideological prejudices since the start of their collaboration.

Financial details of the settlement remain undisclosed.Earlier, Starbuck sought more than five million dollars in damages and filed a lawsuit in Delaware’s Supreme Court in April.

When asked about financial compensation, Starbuck declined to specify, emphasizing that the primary goal was to help develop ethical and politically neutral AI models.

The conflict escalated in summer 2024 when Starbuck noticed incorrect claims by Meta AI about his participation in the Capitol unrest and alleged QAnon ties, which he vehemently denied.

He contacted Meta leadership, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, demanding the removal of false information, and his lawyer sent an official cease-and-desist letter.Meta acknowledged working on reducing political bias in its models, particularly Llama, which historically leaned left in politically sensitive assessments.

The company now aims for more balanced and objective responses on contentious issues.

Recently, reports emerged that contractors working for Meta have access to users’ private conversations with AI chatbots, raising privacy concerns.

Although Meta claims strict confidentiality policies, insiders admit that such practices are widespread among AI developers. This case underscores ongoing challenges related to AI safety, ethics, and user privacy, highlighting the need for additional oversight and safeguards as AI technology continues to evolve rapidly.
