In the first three months of 2025, Germany recorded a concerning rise in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activities, with more than 500 drones spotted flying over vital strategic facilities across the country.

According to a report from the Federal Criminal Police Office, between January and March, there were 536 incidents involving drones flying over military bases, civilian airports, and critical energy infrastructure.A total of 270 drone flights were documented, with multiple devices observed in at least 55 cases simultaneously.

Most sightings occurred during evening and night hours—45% between 6 pm and midnight, and 28% from midnight to early morning.

Notable hotspots included military installations, such as the naval base in Wilhelmshaven, where 10 drone incursions were registered, and the nearby U.S.

Ramstein Air Base with five reported sightings.Of particular concern were the 88 drone flights over energy facilities, including LNG terminals in Stadt and Wilhelmshaven, as well as other key infrastructures like ports, railway stations, defense, and government buildings.

Despite ongoing investigations, authorities have yet to establish definitive foreign control or operatives behind these aerial incursions, though some drone operators have been identified.Experts warn that current detection systems often fail to identify non-commercial or homemade drones, raising alarm over potential security threats.

In response, the German government recently approved a plan enabling military forces to shoot down unauthorized drones if a threat is deemed imminent.

The increasing frequency of suspicious drone flights compels the government to enhance surveillance and response measures to prevent potential provocations or attacks using UAVs.
