In a significant shift in its foreign policy approach, the United Kingdom announced the full restoration of diplomatic relations with Syria, ending years of isolation linked to the country's civil war and internal conflicts. On July 5, following a recent visit by Foreign Secretary David Lammie to Damascus, official statements confirmed London's intent to support the Syrian people and help stabilize the nation. As a demonstration of its serious commitment, Lammie pledged to provide the Syrian government with substantial financial aid — 94.5 million pounds sterling (approximately 129 million U.S. dollars). This financial package forms part of broader efforts aimed at supporting Syria's recovery and development. The Foreign Secretary expressed hope, stating that "the Syrian people now have a new hope," and emphasized that backing the newly formed government is vital for building a more stable, secure, and prosperous future for all Syrians. This decision represents a deeper re-evaluation of Western policy towards Syria, especially in light of recent political changes, including the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by opposition and Islamist forces after more than a decade of civil war. Lammie’s visit, the first in 14 years, marks a critical step toward lifting long-standing international isolation of Syria, signaling a gradual reintegration of the country into the global community. Meanwhile, the United States in December last year lifted most sanctions against Syria, encouraging economic activity and investment to foster economic recovery. Similarly, the UK in April eased some sanctions by unfreezing assets belonging to the Central Bank of Syria and other key organizations, despite maintaining restrictions against officials aligned with the former regime. The announced support includes urgent humanitarian aid and long-term recovery programs focusing on vital sectors such as education, which are designed to reduce illegal migration, eliminate chemical weapons, and combat terrorism. After meetings with Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Shibani and President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Lammie highlighted the importance of an inclusive and representative political transition. This development underscores a shift toward diplomatic engagement and signifies the UK's renewed commitment to supporting peace, stability, and recovery efforts in Syria, in alignment with broader Western strategies to stabilize the region.
