Environmental Emergency in Russia: Ammonia Leak from Tanker Near Ust-Luga

Russia has reported a new incident involving a cargo vessel in its ports — this time concerning a leak of ammonia. According to media reports, the incident occurred at the Ust-Luga port in the Leningrad region during cargo operations on the tanker Eco Wizard, which is designed for transporting nitrate fertilizers. Emergency services responded promptly to localize the leak and prevent potential environmental damage. The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed in a statement that the situation is under control and that the extent of the leak is minor. Meanwhile, Russian Telegram channels indicate that the leak resulted from an explosion on the vessel, with some suggesting possible technical malfunctions. Authorities stated that the crew of 23 personnel was evacuated, and Leningrad region governor Alexander Drozdenko assured that the environmental impact is minimal or nonexistent. The Eco Wizard vessel, built in 2024 and registered under the Marshall Islands flag, continues its operation. Previously, media reports highlighted a series of mysterious explosions on oil tankers that had entered Russian ports in recent months, prompting owners to conduct underwater inspections for the presence of mines or other hazardous items on their ships' hulls.
