The First Watermelon Harvest of 2024: Prices for the Initial Local Batches and What to Expect Next

As the summer season unfolds across Ukraine, local farmers have already begun selling the first harvests of sweet and juicy watermelons, which remain one of the most iconic symbols of Ukrainian summer. The initial batches of locally grown melons have started to appear on the market, primarily from southern regions and Zakarpattia. According to analysts from EastFruit, this year's watermelon season began around the same time as last year. In the early days, wholesale prices ranged from 20 to 28 hryvnias per kilogram ($0.48–$0.67), but supply remains quite limited at this stage. Experts note that prices for the first shipments this year are approximately 10% higher on average than at the same period last season. Market participants warn that widespread sales of watermelons across Ukraine are likely to intensify closer to mid-July. However, there is a possibility of a sharp decline in prices soon, as the supply from other farms could increase. Analysts from the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UkrAgroConsult) suggest that this season may see stabilized fruit and vegetable prices, influenced by current market conditions. Despite recent drops in blueberry prices, the market is already seeing an influx of early-season watermelons, indicating the start of active summer trade. Farmers emphasize that this period is crucial for preparing for the coming months and are optimistic that prices will stabilize shortly.
