Ahead of a critical deadline when the United States plans to finalize the removal of import tariffs, South Korea's Security Advisor V. Sun-lak is scheduled to visit Washington from July 6 to July 8. This visit aims to serve as a pivotal step in negotiations between the two nations, signaling South Korea’s efforts to reach a compromise on trade tariffs and security issues. The Office of the Advisor announced that during this trip, in-depth discussions will be held regarding all unresolved matters, particularly the tariffs that are set to expire on July 9, when new duties could be imposed. Just before heading to Washington, on July 4, the South Korean Minister of Trade, Yoon Hwan-kuk, already flew to the U.S. capital for meetings with U.S. Trade Representative J. Grier and other senior officials. It is expected that the discussions will also cover the potential summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean leader Lee Jae-myoun, who took office last month. Previously, South Korea stated that it would not retaliate against U.S. tariffs due to Seoul’s historical debt to Washington. Acting President Han Dak-su emphasized that U.S. support played a significant role in shaping modern South Korea and urged diplomatic solutions. This visit is considered a strategic move to maintain dialogue and find mutually beneficial solutions that could prevent an escalation into a trade confrontation. The negotiations are crucial for the future of U.S.-South Korea relations, especially as South Korea’s role on the global stage continues to grow amid challenging economic conditions worldwide.
