The threat of a large-scale escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is intensifying. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the Kremlin is not limiting itself to traditional military aggression but is attempting tocreate additional groundwork for expanding its influence in the region. Reports indicate attempts to involve yet another country — Laos — under the guise of humanitarian projects and infrastructural initiatives. Ukrainian intelligence reveals that Russia is currently trying to organize the deployment of Lao engineering troops for demining operations in Russian border regions, particularly in Kursk, to legitimize the presence of foreign military personnel on Russian soil and strengthen its military capabilities. Laos’ leadership has expressed readiness to send up to 50 sappers to Russian territory for demining tasks. Moreover, Laos provides free assistance to Russian forces in rehabilitating wounded invaders fighting against Ukraine, highlighting the close military and political ties between the two nations. Equally alarming is Russia’s activity elsewhere — in Africa, where it leverages infrastructure projects by state corporations such as RZD and Rosatom to promote its political and economic interests. Russian supplies of modern weaponry to conflict zones south of the Sahara are aimed at expanding their military footprint in this strategic region. All these efforts reveal a systematic and targeted attempt by Kremlin to extend its military and political influence regionally, which could lead to even greater international tension and conflict escalation.
