How to Properly Name the Insect Known as ‘Kuznëchik’ in Ukrainian:Language Observations and Tips

One common error is calling a certain insect 'kuznëchik,' which is a direct calque from Russian. The correct Ukrainian term for this creature is 'konyk.' This small insect has long legs, can jump, and produces distinctive chirping sounds during flight. Literature classics, such as works by Panas Myrny, Lesya Ukrainka, and Oleksandr Oles, mention 'konyk' describing scenes with these insects. The word 'kuznëchik' is a Russian calque that does not fit the genuine Ukrainian language sound and usage. Therefore, we should always use 'konyk' when referring to this insect.
