The Moldovan capital, Chișinău, recently hosted a landmark event — a summit between Moldova and the European Union, marking the first time such a high-level meeting has taken place. Moldova’s President Maia Sandu warmly welcomed the EU delegation at the State Residence, which included Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Charles Michel, President of the European Council. This summit is historic because such a format of dialogue had not occurred before in Moldova’s diplomatic history. The main objectives of the event are to discuss current cooperation issues, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, and to outline future steps towards Moldova’s EU accession. Discussions are expected to cover the Economic Growth Plan, for which the EU has allocated €1.9 billion, as well as security concerns amid modern challenges. An important aspect of the summit is the support for reforms within Moldova and a signal from Brussels emphasizing the significance of the reform agenda as crucial for Moldova’s eventual EU membership ambitions. Additionally, in the context of national security, the EU is preparing additional measures to counter cyber threats ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September, as there are fears of Russian interference attempts in the democratic process. This is the first time the EU’s cyber reserve has been actively deployed, highlighting the severity of the situation and the EU’s deep concerns regarding external influence and threats to democracy in Eastern Europe.
