In recent European diplomatic developments, efforts to adopt a new package of sanctions against Russia faced another setback. On July 4th, EU ambassadors gathered in Brussels for a Coreper session, where the long-anticipated 18th sanctions package was once again under review. Unfortunately, due to Slovakia’s position, this package was not approved, highlighting the ongoing difficulties in achieving unity within the European Union on sanctions against Moscow. Sources close to diplomacy reported that some representatives from Slovakia requested additional time to make a final decision, citing internal discussions and the need for more comprehensive justification. Others indicated that Slovakia has been engaging in active negotiations with the European Commission concerning concerns over the projected consequences of halting Russian gas supplies to the EU, scheduled to begin from January 1, 2028. These negotiations are reportedly yielding preliminary positive results, leading experts to believe that the 18th sanctions package may soon be approved as the parties aim for compromise. The background of this issue centers around gas supply guarantees, with Slovakia insisting on assurances from the European Commission regarding potential economic and energy impacts during a complete cessation of Russian gas imports. Media reports earlier predicted that after successful talks in Bratislava on July 3rd, Slovakia would lift its blockade on the sanctions package. However, the situation remains uncertain as negotiators continue to seek mutually acceptable terms.
