Desperate Struggles and Homecoming: The Eighth Exchange Round Under Istanbul Agreements Marks a Day of Hope for Ukraine

July 4th became a significant date for Ukrainian society and freed prisoners of war. On this day, the eighth phase of a large-scale prisoner exchange, negotiated under the Istanbul agreements, took place. This operation saw the return of not only severely wounded and ill servicemen but also young defenders aged up to 25, who had been held captive or gone missing for months. Deputy head of the Coordination Staff for handling prisoners of war, Lieutenant General Budanov, along with other high-ranking officials, confirmed that this stage was unique not only because of the number of returned individuals but also due to the emotional intensity and sincerity of their feelings. Freed defenders shared videos showing their initial reactions — tears, words of gratitude, and a profound sense of freedom upon returning home. Among them are medics, ordinary soldiers, officers, and civilians, illustrating the diverse fabric of Ukraine's frontlines. The youngest released was only 20, while the oldest was 59. This phase saw individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and statuses returning. Photographs from the frontline reveal deep emotions and heartfelt gratitude for faith and perseverance that led to this victory. The sense of liberation for each of them is a special milestone — a breath of fresh air during times of uncertainty and loss. This day undoubtedly symbolizes hope and resilience of the Ukrainian spirit, capable of overcoming any adversity to bring everyone back home who needs it most.
