Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Summons Hungarian Ambassador Over Hostile Remarks Against Ukraine

Ukraine has once again reaffirmed its principled stance regarding its relations with Hungary by officially summoning the country's ambassador to the Ukrainian MFA. This measure was taken in response to recent hostile and provocative statements made by Hungarian politicians targeting Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, this action responds to ongoing attempts by Hungarian officials to portray Ukraine negatively and to involve it in internal political struggles. The MFA emphasizes that Ukraine, respecting the sovereignty of other nations, has never interfered in their internal affairs. Nonetheless, the ministry condemns Hungary’s interference, which has recently caused deep concern given the historical and strategic context of bilateral relations. Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Mishchenko, during his meeting with Ambassador Antal Hězer, expressed outrage at the attempt to depict Ukraine as an enemy in the eyes of the public—while Kyiv continues to fight against external aggressors and defend European values. Mishchenko stressed that such actions evoke disdain and insult, especially for the Ukrainian people, who, together with the global community, are making efforts to defeat Russian aggression. Therefore, any attempts to discredit Ukraine by Hungarian politicians are not accepted and threaten to deteriorate bilateral relations. This context also includes recent statements by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who, following a so-called “referral referendum,” warned against Ukraine’s potential accession to the EU. He claimed that the majority of Hungarian citizens oppose such steps, which further complicates diplomatic ties between the countries. Ukrainian diplomats reaffirm that any actions undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty will be strongly condemned and will provoke appropriate response from Kyiv.
