Renowned Ukrainian Actress Tetyana Sheliha Passes Away: A Loss for the Ukrainian Theatre and Film World
On Thursday, July 3rd, the Ukrainian cultural scene mourned the loss of one of its brightest stars — actress Tetyana Sheliha. A highly respected figure, she made a significant impact through her performances in both theater and cinema, earning admiration from audiences and colleagues alike. The news of her passing was shared by her daughter, Anastasia Savytska-Sheliha, on her Facebook page, revealing that her mother had been battling serious health issues in recent months. In her final days, Ms. Sheliha’s condition deteriorated sharply; she was no longer able to respond to calls or messages, prompting her family to kindly ask others not to disturb her to avoid unnecessary suffering. In recent years, Tetyana Sheliha had largely retreated from film and television, focusing instead on stage performances and her family life. In 2022, she underwent a complex heart surgery, an indication of her ongoing health struggles. In 1972, she began working at the Sevastopol Russian Drama Theatre, where she dedicated over two decades of her life to the stage. She became well-known to Ukrainian audiences through her role in the series “When We Are at Home,” and she also appeared in films such as “Lady Homeless,” “Medicine for Grandma,” and the musical “The Two Hares.” Her theatrical performances graced stages like Lesya Ukrainka Theatre and Sevastopol Drama Theatre. Her achievements earned her the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine.
