Hamas Demands Guarantees Amidst New Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza

At the heart of recent diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict in Gaza lies Hamas's complex demand for assurances that the new U.S. proposal for a ceasefire will not serve as a temporary pause but will ultimately lead to the long-awaited end of hostilities. According to sources close to the Palestinian group, Hamas intends to respond to the proposal by Friday, July 4. However, it is already evident that the conditions set forth by Hamas are extremely strict and require significant guarantees. Media reports suggest that Israeli officials see high chances of reaching an agreement that includes the release of hostages and the cessation of fighting, which has lasted over 21 months. Additionally, high-level sources indicate that both sides are already discussing the specifics and the potential process, but the main obstacle remains the guarantees and commitments needed to ensure the ceasefire is lasting and firm. Should Hamas give a positive response, Israeli delegations are expected to join indirect negotiations, possibly held in Egyptian or Qatari venues—countries acting as mediators in this complex diplomatic game. The plan involves a phased release of ten living Israeli hostages and the return of the bodies of 18 others in exchange for Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli jails. Currently, approximately 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with an estimated 20 still alive. Meanwhile, officials confirm that preparations for signing the ceasefire agreement are complete, and all necessary negotiations tools are in place. It is noteworthy that in early July, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Israel and Hamas to find a quick resolution, announcing an agreement on a 60-day ceasefire that would facilitate the release of some hostages and reduce regional tensions. Trump warned that ignoring these proposals would only worsen the situation.
