In today's Ukrainian language landscape, an increasing number of citizens are consciously transitioning to speaking completely in Ukrainian, especially since the onset of full-scale Russian aggression. However, despite this positive trend, many speakers occasionally make linguistic mistakes, often due to the influence of Russian words or colloquialisms known as surzhyk. A common example is the word «ручєй», a direct calque from Russian. The correct Ukrainian term for a small stream of water is «струмок». This word is rich in both literal and figurative meanings, frequently encountered in literature, scientific texts, and everyday speech. To enhance one’s vocabulary and cultural language awareness, it is recommended to dedicate more time to reading, especially quality Ukrainian literature and authoritative dictionaries, and to avoid Russian borrowings and colloquialisms. Proper usage of Ukrainian words like «струмок» not only allows clearer expression but also contributes to preserving and developing our linguistic heritage. Additionally, there is the word «ручай», which also denotes a small stream of water and is often used poetically or in figurative speech. Mastering the correct terms and their appropriate contexts helps create a more beautiful and accurate Ukrainian language, fostering a sense of national identity and pride. Upholding the purity of the Ukrainian language is a vital expression of patriotism and respect for our cultural traditions.
