Ukrainian engineers developed technology that complicates Russian Shahed drone operations, tracing its origins to the early 2000s
At the heart of Ukraine's scientific and technological innovations lies a groundbreaking technology capable of countering modern radio-electronic warfare measures and ensuring continuous navigation for unmanned aerial vehicles like the 'Shahed.' According to Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, this technology originates from Ukraine and has deep roots dating back to the early 2000s. It is based on Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas (CRPA), specialized devices that, together with modern electronic warfare systems, can maintain precise navigation and block false signals mimicking legitimate GPS signals. Interestingly, this technology has already been employed in Russian reconnaissance drones such as 'Orlan-10,' 'SuperCam,' and combat drones 'Shahed-136,' which are actively used by Russia to attack Ukraine. Ukrainian engineers who developed these antennas in the early 2000s now find themselves in the midst of military conflicts—one of them tragically lost his life in Russia, while another remains under threat. CRPA—Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas—allow UAVs to stay on course even amid active electronic warfare attacks. They identify and ignore fake signals, complicating enemy efforts and increasing the chances of Ukrainian drones successfully completing their missions. However, in this technological race, Ukraine still lags behind Russia, which mass-produces similar systems. Nevertheless, Ukrainian engineers continue to demonstrate exceptional skill and innovation, capable of influencing the course of the ongoing war. In this challenging environment, Ukrainian public figures and military experts urge the government to accelerate research and support technological development, as future warfare will be determined by technological advancements and their rapid enhancements. Additionally, active involvement of the private sector in military innovations alongside stronger international cooperation is essential to faster integrate these technologies into Ukraine's armed forces.
