Tension from Migration Crisis: Poland Announces Temporary Border Controls with Germany and Lithuania

In response to increasing challenges posed by illegal migration and growing tensions within the European Union, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk officially announced the implementation of temporary border control measures with Germany and Lithuania starting from July 7. These actions are part of a broader strategy aimed at minimizing unauthorized border crossings and alleviating rising tensions caused by the mass influx of migrants. Tusk emphasized that these measures are temporary and will be enforced solely to protect national security and regulate migration flows. Meanwhile, Poland's government has faced sharp criticism from nationalist opposition forces, accusing it of turning the country into a transit zone for illegal migrants being sent back from Germany. In February of this year, Germany also introduced temporary border controls, confirming the collective efforts of European countries in combating illegal migration. The liberal government of Tusk called for closer cooperation with German counterparts to ensure the security of the EU's external borders. However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the Schengen system would remain open but its operation depends on preventing abuse and smuggling. Poland is also planning to implement additional border measures in collaboration with Lithuania to counter illegal crossings. The political situation remains tense, with right-wing activists organizing patrols along the border, further complicating the scenario. Experts highlight that resolving the migration crisis requires joint efforts within the European Union to ensure stability and safety for all member states.
