In response to the evolving global situation, the Swedish government has made a significant decision to revise its aid structure toward countries in need. Specifically, Sweden plans to reallocate previously approved funds and allocate an additional approximately 150 million euros — about 1.67 billion Swedish kronor — to actively support Ukraine and humanitarian efforts worldwide. This move reflects the increasing number of crises globally, including deteriorating social and economic conditions in regions such as Sudan, Gaza, Yemen, and, most notably, Ukraine. The Swedish authorities announced that these changes are urgent and driven by the necessity to respond swiftly to current challenges. Minister of Trade and International Cooperation Benjamin Dusa emphasized that today’s world faces numerous crises, and Sweden aims to redirect its budget resources to provide maximum assistance to affected countries. “While the reduction of aid from the U.S. presents additional challenges to global stability and security, our country is committed to doing everything possible to support Ukraine, save lives, and alleviate human suffering. It is vital not only to react to immediate crises but also to anticipate future support needs,” Dusa stated. The new budget redistribution primarily targets support for Ukraine and regions affected by conflicts and humanitarian crises. The majority of funds will be directed towards these areas, with other geographical sectors receiving supplementary resources except Ukraine and adjacent regions. Dusa highlighted that supporting Ukraine is a top priority in Swedish foreign policy, viewing this aid as a crucial element for European stability. “Ukrainian cities and communities face constant shelling, infrastructure destruction, and ongoing threats to civilians. Additional help is essential,” Dusa underscored. In June, Sweden already announced the allocation of 50 million euros for NATO projects—NSATU (NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine) and NATO CAP (Comprehensive Assistance Package)—focused on training Ukrainian armed forces and providing support. The country also collaborates closely with Germany in electronic warfare and security initiatives, reaffirming its active participation in supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing uncertainties.
